Stigma in Urban Employers from China and the USA
Principal Investigator: P. Corrigan
More Information
This project will study the effects of stigma associated with behaviorally-driven health disorders on employment related discrimination by comparing employer attitudes in two of the most populated countries in the world. Attitudes about three disorders will be the focus of this study: psychotic disorders, alcohol abuse disorders, and HIV/AIDS. This study will examine the attitudes and behaviors of employers using probability samples that focus on three urban sites: Chicago, Hong Kong, and Beijing. Central research questions include why employers endorse stigmatizing beliefs about these disorders, how these attitudes result in withholding work opportunities, and how social and political variables mitigate employer attitudes and actions. This proposal has been submitted in collaboration with colleagues in the Peoples' Republic of China to NIH.
